From the Founder’s Diary

Bringing a change in society requires bringing change at an individual level. When people change, society changes and this process requires passion, patience and determination. Raj Kumar Maurya, the founder of Baudh Kalayankari Mahila Utthan Trust, tread on the path of change and took the mantle of transforming society. A resident of Govindpur, District Ghazipur, Raj Kumar ji got inspired to pursue social welfare during his student life. He started working at the ground level, reaching out to those in need. He used to actively participate in protests against injustice and inequalities.

Raj Kumar ji got married in 2001 and continued doing social work along with his wife. In 2007, they started the Baudh Kalyankari Mahila Utthan Trust for carrying out welfare activities. Under the aegis of this NGO, they established a training centre for vocational skills for girls. Since then Raj Kumar ji and his wife have been carrying out a range of welfare activities, mainly centred around women empowerment and upliftment. Raj Kumar ji believes that instead of blindly following societal norms, one should take initiatives that serve the society. After the death of his mother in January 2022, instead of organising the traditional mrityu bhoj, Raj Kumar ji decided to do something different. There was an eight beegha ground in the village where children used to practice running. Raj Kumar ji personally funded a facelift for the ground. Solar lights were installed and a restroom was constructed to facilitate children’s practice. This was an unconventional way of paying homage to his mother and creating an asset that would be useful for all times to come.

Baudh Kalayankari Mahila Utthan Trust was established in 2007 and registered in 2016 in Village Govindpur, District Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. The NGO was set up with the aim of providing employment opportunities for rural women and helping the downtrodden fight against injustice. The NGO also has a skill development centre that provides training to young girls in stitching, embroidery, painting and beauty services. The duration of these courses vary from three months to six months. Students can either opt for full time or part time training. More than 100 girls are trained at this centre every year. The NGO encourages young girls to enrol in these courses during summer vacations so that they can acquire additional skills. Girls from poor families are also encouraged to pursue these courses so that they can contribute financially to their family.

Raj Kumar ji is a person with strong conviction towards social welfare. He believes that every person has the power to bring about a meaningful change. This NGO is an effort on his part to help build a better society. The NGO launched a news channel on YouTube, BKMU Express, in December 2021 to harness the power of mass media and throw light on issues that affect the common man. The channel highlights local issues like lack of civil amenities, problems faced by farmers and how societal evils impact lives. One such incident that the news channel covered was of a poor farmer whose field was inundated with the gram sabha water. Because of this, he was unable to cultivate any crops on his land. In spite of running from pillar to post, the farmer did not receive any help. This came to the knowledge of the NGO. One day, the NGO volunteers reached the site and walked in the slush to highlight the plight of the poor farmer. All this was telecast on BKMU news, because of which appropriate action was taken. The news channel has helped the NGO in earning a name for itself in the area.
